Samantha was once again watching daytime court shows, but this time she was perfectly alert and waved to Pammy and me when we walked in. I heard the shower running and assumed that was where we’d find Lola.

“We’re gonna need someone to watch over you.” Pammy stated.

“I don’t want to be a burden. I can take care of myself.”

Pammy grunted. “I don’t want you involved in a game of vampire hide and seek. You need some stability and peace. I can’t imagine last night’s visitors did anything for your peace of mind. Your family is across the country, right?”

She nodded.

Pammy turned to me. “You think Bruce wants to play protection bear?”

Bruce was a Pima, or in his native tongue an Akimel O’odham. He was also a bear shifting, semi-immortal, who enjoyed helping his friends and he just so happened to be mine.

“I can give him a call.”

Pammy sat next to Samantha while I walked out to the crowded Arizona room to make the call. Bruce, per usual, was willing to help out. I needed to get her to his house in Queen Creek though since he was working on some projects he couldn’t walk away from. I told him she’d be there by that evening and left it at that.

I stepped back into the living room and felt a magical pull. Looking up, I saw my goblin trunk glowing lightly. I sent a ‘quit it’ down our bond. I was about to gesture to Pammy for us to take our magic-making intentions to another part of the house when I felt my phone vibrate in my hand. I looked down to see “Prince Pain in the Ass” light up on my screen. I really needed to update that. Even if it was still accurate.

“Hey,” I answered.

“Hello, I’ve heard rumors that you had an interesting night.”

“Who narked on me?”

“You just did.”

“Huh?”

“Lola called to take another personal day. I was hoping that you would reach out, but given how long I’ve been waiting I thought it best to call and make sure you had not been maimed or murdered.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Maim-free and still with the living. How about you? Any exciting comings and goings in goblin land?” I changed the subject.

“I am also free of injuries though my cousin and uncle try my patience with their endless petitions. I wish to hear about what has Lola staying home this day.”

“Sounds like an invasion of privacy.”

“Peg, why do you insist on being difficult.”

I frowned at the phone and sighed. “I don’t know. I think it has something to with adversarial beginning and I’m just bad at relationships. I get that I should probably call you to let you know when a neurotic vampire and her boy-toy witch show up to my house in the middle of the night, but I have it taken care of. I’m sorry about your family.” I added.

“I understand. It sounds like a trying evening.” He responded.

“It was not a great way to wake up.
